Sammi Garett, the perennially pink singer best known for her nearly ten years of work with Turkuaz, has released her debut solo single, “With You”. Arriving along with an eye-catching music video, the track gives listeners their first taste of Garett’s Freekbass-produced EP, Sweet Tooth, due out this summer.
Garett had a rollercoaster year in 2021 marked by life-altering ups and downs. At the best of times, she was getting engaged to her creative partner, bandmate, and soulmate, saxophonist Greg Sanderson, or celebrating Talking Heads‘ Remain In Light with their successful funk band alongside living legends like Jerry Harrison and Adrian Belew. Then, in early November, the members of Turkuaz announced that they were parting ways, stopping the band’s upswing in its tracks and leaving legions of fans in shock.
Garett refocused her creative energy on songwriting, eventually linking up with Freekbass, a frequent collaborator, as the producer of her first solo effort. While contributions by familiar faces like Sanderson, Freekbass, and The Bump Assembly bandmate Sky White (keyboards) helped create an atmosphere of creativity in the studio, for the first time, Sammi Garett was at the wheel.
The year was no doubt eventful for Sammi, but her outlook on what’s happened and where she’s heading is characteristically rosy. “I learned so much in the past year. I’m very grateful for all those moments and I wouldn’t change a thing,” she said of the year’s peaks and valleys. “I feel incredibly lucky to have such supportive fans, family and friends by my side, cheering me on.”
“I believe that everything happens for a reason,” she added. “Change can be really scary but I truly believe I’m exactly where I need to be and I am beyond happy about it!”
In the new music video for “With You”, a mellow drop of reverb-laden electro-pop, Garett quite literally dives right into celebration, plunging her hands deep into a brightly colored cake and mashing it between her pink-painted fingers. The clip, directed by Angie Wilson, moves between various simple yet striking visual moments starring Garett, who played synths on the track in addition to singing.

Sammi will join Freekbass & The Bump Assembly on tour for 2022, with performances set to include a selection of her own solo songs. Greg Sanderson will also be joining on saxophone when he isn’t performing with his new project, The Horn Section, featuring fellow Turkuaz vets Josh Schwartz (baritone sax) and Chris Brouwers (trumpet).
