Legendary jazz and rock guitarist Carlos Santana has announced a new EP,  In Search of Mona Lisa, due out on January 25th via Concord Records. The 2019 release will mark Santana’s first with the California-based record label.

In Search of Mona Lisa marks Santana’s first release since 2017’s The Power Of Peace, a collaborative effort with The Isley Brothers, as well as Santana’s wife and touring partner Cindy Blackman Santana.

Santana’s website notes his inspiration for the forthcoming EP, explaining,

Three spellbinding and transportive new songs takes listeners inside a magical and deeply personal experience Carlos had when he visited the Louvre Museum and set his eyes on Leonardo da Vinci’s beguiling masterpiece.

In all of the years that the guitar icon had visited Paris, he had never been to the Louvre, but on a recent day off while on tour, he decided to go to the museum with his wife, drummer Cindy Blackman Santana, and his family. All it took was one look into the implacable eyes of the Mona Lisa for Santana to feel as though something strange and powerful was taking place.

In Search of Mona Lisa, which can pre-ordered on CD and vinyl here, includes three new recordings along with edited versions of two of the songs.

Santana’s website also notes that a new full-length album produced by Rick Rubin will be released this summer.
