Last week, System Of A Down frontman Serj Tankian announced the release of his much-discussed Elasticity solo EP, due out on March 19th via Alchemy Recordings/BMG. The forthcoming release comes as the singer’s fifth solo offering and first in nearly eight years. Along with the album’s overall announcement, Tankian also shared the music video for the title track as the lead single as well.
In a press statement revealing Elasticity, Tankian noted that several of the songs on the five-track offering were originally written for a System Of A Down record. Creative differences within the group, however, led the musician and activist to go out on his own.
“When I conceived possibly doing another record with the guys from System of a Down a few years back, I started working on a set of songs that I arranged in rock format for that purpose,” Tankian said in a press release. “As we weren’t able to see eye to eye on the vision going forward with a SOAD album, I decided to release these songs under my moniker.”

Though “Elasticity” doesn’t sound much like a System Of A Down song, it definitely shares some characteristics with the nu-metal pioneers. The track’s hard-driving guitar riffs and drumming give off the familiar feeling of SOAD, but Tankian fluctuates the overall mood throughout the song. Alongside the dystopian music video directed by Vlad Kaptur, “Elasticity” fires as an opening shot from Tankian declaring that he’s doing things his way.
