Sharon Jones was an American soul and funk singer known as the powerful leader of Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings. While her success came later in life, her talent resonated amongst many – enough to be nominated for a Grammy in the Best R&B Album category in 2014 for her Give The People What They Want. Sharon’s heroic battle with pancreatic cancer was no secret, though it seems unexpected that it would take her life this soon. It had come and gone once before, but returned heavily in 2013. According to a statement, she was surrounded by “her loved ones, including the Dap-Kings” when she passed.

Recently, Jones told Rolling Stone that “I have cancer; cancer don’t have me” and that when she walks on stage, “whatever pain is gone. You forget about everything. There is no cancer. There is no sickness. You’re just floating, looking in their faces and hearing them scream. That’s all that is to me.” Read the rest of the interview here. A strong, powerful woman who brought herself to life through her art, we are thankful for the beauty that Sharon Jones provided this world.

Her family asks that instead of flowers, donations be made to Cure Pancreatic Cancer – The Lustgarten, James Brown Foundation, or Little Kids Rock.
