Shots Fired, the latest side project from Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe guitarist DJ Williams, has released a new, animated video for “Sunset Trails”. The photogenic music video comes from the band’s forthcoming project The Samurai, The Cowboy, The Seductress, The Villain, a concept album for a cinematic universe.

Shots Fired features a venerable cast of musicians assembled by Williams, and includes bassist Dan Africano (Ghost Light), keyboardist Joe Tatton (The New Mastersounds), drummer Kowan Turner, saxophonist Nick Gerlach, trumpeter André Mali, and trombonist Scott Flynn (Elephant Wrecking Ball).

On “Sunset Trails”, Shots Fired captures the persona of The Cowboy through a dusty groove led down the trail by Williams’s guitar. Meanwhile, the video tells a story line of love, lust, and betrayal in the old West. The progression of the animated story is also interspersed with shots of a smokey barroom where Shots Fired perform. Throughout the song, the guitar sounds off followed by the horn section as the animated characters reach a new challenge. In the end, the music fades out and the screen comes to an eery darkness as the horn section entangles with Williams’s guitar one last time. Williams said of the recording,

I am super happy to share with you the new instrumental track from my guys Shots Fired. Inspired by Quentin Tarantino films and old black and white spaghetti Westerns, let this be the soundtrack for your own private rodeo scene or whatever… horses riding off into the distance, canned beans around the fire, saloon bravado, real or imagined.
