Sierra Hull has announced the forthcoming release of her new album, A Tip Toe High Wire, due out March 7th. Along with the announcement, Hull shared the album’s first single, “Boom”.

A Tip Toe High Wire is Hull’s first full-length album in five years, following 2020’s 25 Trips, and the first to feature her touring band comprised of Shaun Richardson (guitar), Avery Merritt (fiddle), Erik Coveney (bass), and Mark Raudabaugh (drums), in addition to her husband Justin Moses and more. Self-produced with longtime friend and engineer Shani Gandhi, it is also her first album released independently.

“In some ways, it feels like stepping out into a different territory,” Hull said of her first time making a record without the support of a label. “And leaning into that at this chapter of my career—the freedom of being able to be out on my own, to create with no walls for what feels like the first time—has helped me grow.”

Hull has earned a reputation as one of the top voices in contemporary bluegrass with her blazing chops and technical precision, but with lead single “Boom”—which she co-wrote with Adam Wright and recorded back in 2021 at Nashville’s Ocean Way Studios—the mandolinist/bandleader showcases a different side of her musical personality. Not only does she play acoustic guitar on the track in addition to covering lead vocals and mandolin, she also demonstrates that bluegrass isn’t all about speed with a mid-tempo groove that invites less boot stomping and more head bobbing.

Her sweet vocals take center stage, supported by rich harmonies from Ronnie Bowman and Justin Moses, though as the song ramps up, she takes a moment to highlight her picking prowess too, interweaving tasteful licks on both her instruments with Shaun Richardson’s electric guitar in a brief but potent back-and-forth. Bassist Geoff Saunders and drummer Mark Raudabaugh meanwhile hold down a steady rhythm and Avery Merritt accentuates the groove, percussively plucking along on his fiddle.

Sierra Hull – “Boom”

Sierra Hull — “Boom” (On The Beach) — Live In Mexico

Sierra Hull – “Boom” Lyrics:

Who turned out the light in your heart
Flipped the switch and left you lonely sitting in the dark
Well, lucky for you all you need’s one spark
and then boom, live to love again

Promises break like little figurines
We slip up and they get busted all to smithereens
Take the time to cry, but make some time clean
and then boom, live to love again

You gotta open up the windows
You gotta let some sunlight in
Cause it’s a beautiful day
So let the shadows have the shade
and then boom, live to love again

Boom, your heart starts beating
Boom, you get that feeling
Like falling all the way up to the ceiling

You gotta open up the windows
You gotta let some sunlight in
Cause it’s a beautiful day
So let the shadows fade away
and then boom, live to love again
