Silk Sonic made its highly anticipated return on Friday with the band’s sophomore single, “Skate”. Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak revealed their ’70s R&B/soul nostalgia act earlier this year with a world debut performance of the dynamic duo’s then-only single, “Leave The Door Open“, at this year’s Grammys.
On “Skate”, Silk Sonic takes viewers out of the bedroom from “Leave The Door Open” into the parking lot for a more laid-back vibe. With .Paak the human metronome at the center of the rhythm, Mars adds color commentary with hand drums as the entire ensemble explores vintage R&B grooves. The drummer also takes lead vocals though, in a group like Silk Sonic with two world-class vocalists, it’s never just a one-man show. Meanwhile, retro rollerskaters remain just out of Silk Sonic’s reach as they continue to “Skate” on by. The new song was also co-written by jazz duo DOMi and JD Beck.
“Me and the team was thinking about what if we were performing in the middle of a roller rink, what would that bassline be doing? What would the guitar be doing? What would the drums be talking about? And I wanted to play congas and that’s what you get,” Mars said in an interview with Apple Music. “You get a song called ‘Skate.’ Talking about I’m trying to float. I’m trying to glide.”
