Things got ugly at a Smash Mouth concert last night in Fort Collins, CO, as singer Steve Hartwell launched into an expletive-laden rant after members of the crowd threw bread loaves at him and the band.

Okay, let’s take this a step back. First of all, the Taste of Fort Collins street festival booked Smash Mouth as one of the main performers, possibly unaware that 1998 was seventeen years ago. While there may have been other motivations for people to attend the festival, we’re assuming that the fans didn’t realize this time had elapsed, either.

Now, one of the booths at the festival was giving out bread loaves to attendees as a way of welcoming them, which seems like a quaint thing for someone at a Fort Collins food festival to do. However, when Smash Mouth came out on stage, both looking and sounding approximately twenty years older than the fans remembered (think “All Star”), the fans retaliated by flinging projectile bread on stage.
