Last fall, The Smashing Pumpkins revealed plans to release a 33-track follow-up album to 1995’s Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness and 2000’s Machina with a forthcoming third installment of the conceptual trilogy that those two albums established over two decades ago. It appears the popular rock band is sticking to its word, as the group shared an update on the start of the recording process for the album in a social media post on Tuesday.
The brief but enticing post includes a simple, grainy image of a drum set all microphoned-up to be recorded at a studio in Nashville. The caption shared along with the photo reads, “Starting new SP album today, the 33 song sequel to MCIS and Machina. Songs are written, lyrics too… so now it’s just record-record-record.”

“We’re very proud to [make this sequel] because in many ways this completes the circle on everything we started and weren’t able to finish at that time, so we’re very excited about that,” singer Billy Corgan said with the album’s initial announcement back in October 2020.
The still-untitled album project is projected to arrive at some point later this year, though a release date has not yet been confirmed.
The rock band released Cyr back in late November, which marked Smashing Pumpkins’ first double album since Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness. Corgan also clarified that Cyr is merely volume two of the group’s 2018 record Shiny And Oh So Bright Vol. 1/LP: No Past. No Present. No Future. The band is already working on volume three for a release at a later date.
More recently, Smashing Pumpkins explored the music on their new album with their In Ashes five-part animated series.
