Syracuse-based funk outfit Sophistafunk played a hometown opening spot for Grammy-award winning act Snarky Puppy at the Landmark Theatre last week. Following the show, Sophistafunk returned to the stage for a proper late-night celebration at local venue Funk n’ Waffles (owned by bassist/keyboardist Adam Gold), which featured an entire second set sit-in from Snarky members Nate Werth, Shawn Martin, Chris Bullock, and Mike Maher.
Dubbed “Sophistapup,” the set features covers of Notorious B.I.G., Bob Marley, as well as mash-ups of James Brown‘s “Sex Machine” with Coolio‘s “Gangsta’s Paradise” and the funk/hip-hop cooperative’s original number “Sex, Drugs, Rock n’ Roll.” The group has released a full recording of the entire performance via Bandcamp, which can be downloaded here.
