On Friday night, Soulive offered up the penultimate performance of their Bowlive VIII residency at Brooklyn’s Brooklyn Bowl with some help from George Porter Jr.

Soulive—comprised of Eric Krasno, Alan Evans, and Neal Evans—kicked off their first set with “So Live”, off of the band’s 2002 Get Down! release. The trio moved forward with “Steppin”, their beloved cover of The Beatles‘ “Elenor Rigby”, and the newer “Waves” before Alan invited up “The King of Bowlive”, George Porter Jr., to add some extra depth on the bass. The quartet worked through covers of The Meters‘ “Pungee” and “Africa”, which was followed up by a set-closing take on the New Orleans traditional “Iko Iko”.

Returning to the stage with George Porter Jr. for their second set, Soulive delivered a set chock-full of The Meters’ material “Look-Ka Py Py”, “Keep On Marching”, “I Need More Time”, “What’cha Say”, and “He Bite Me (The Dragon)”. Following The Meters marathon, the quartet worked through Jerry Garcia’s “Sugaree”, a song that George has adapted into his live catalog over the years. Soulive brought their electric second set to a close with “It Ain’t No Use” before delivering a lone encore of The Meters’ “Just Kissed My Baby”.
