The inaugural Sound On Sound took place over the weekend at Bridgeport, CT’s Seaside Park (former home of Gathering of the Vibes) with a lineup headed by Stevie Nicks, Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds, The Roots, Brandi Carlile, and The Lumineers.
The festivities kicked off on Saturday, September 24th with daytime performances by bluegrass-influenced folk band Trampled By Turtles, roots rock eight-piece The Revivalists, the Ben Bridwell-led Band of Horses, Ohio folk band Caamp, and singer-songwriter Zach Bryan. Sets were staggered across two stages—the Sunset Stage and the Seaside Stage—so attendees didn’t have to miss any of the performances.
Saturday evening was highlighted by headlining sets from The Lumineers, Father John Misty, and Stevie Nicks, who closed out the night on the Seaside Stage just before 11 p.m.
Sunday, September 25th saw afternoon sets by festival favorites The Main Squeeze, alt-rockers Spin Doctors, and indie-folk band The Head and the Heart. The Roots, who replaced Black Pumas as one of Sunday’s headliners after they announced the cancelation of their remaining 2022 tour dates in August, kicked off the evening performances on the Seaside Stage. Gary Clark Jr. played next on Sunset Stage, followed by Brandi Carlile on the Seaside Stage and The National back on the Sunset Stage. Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds closed out the festival Sunday night on the Seaside Stage.
Additional performers included Jenny Lewis, Noah Kahan, Jade Bird, Geese, Trousdale, Funky Dawgz, The Cameroons, Drew Angus, and Charley.
The inaugural Sound On Sound was not without its hiccups. According to a local news report, some attendees complained of exorbitantly long lines and inadequate lighting around the festival grounds. Festival organizers admitted the first year was a little “chaotic” but assured fans that they will make improvements so that the same problems do not happen again next year.
