Internationally influenced, Memphis-based soul outfit Southern Avenue pointed its compass toward the U.K. for a new cover of Genesis‘ “That’s All”. The take on the track from Genesis’ 1983 self-titled LP arrives as So Ave’s latest release following its 2021 album, Be The Love You Want.

Vocalist Tierinii Jackson gives Phil Collins‘ lyrics a softer touch, as the rhythm section plays up the song’s R&B bounce. Jeremy Powell‘s keyboards give the song an added vintage quality, with Ori Naftaly‘s swirling guitar fading out the track.

It was Naftaly’s love of Genesis that set Southern Avenue on a path toward recording the cover. While on tour in the U.K., the Israeli-born guitarist led the band on a deep dive through Genesis’ first three albums. The rest of Southern Avenue joined in the expedition, later watching a documentary on Genesis. When it came time to record a cover, Ori recommended what Phil Collins described as the band’s attempt at writing a Beatles song.
