This past Friday saw Spafford go live for a free stream from the band’s “The Pound” studio in Pheonix, AZ. The resulting 150-minute webcast dubbed, The Big Field Sessions, saw the desert-dwelling jam quartet perform a set comprised entirely of improvised music.

From the opening pulsating rhythm that began the stream, Spafford moved through the space-funk soundscapes that have defined the band’s music. While the nearly two-hour stream was made up entirely of improvisation, the session saw the band move through a myriad of moods. From laid-back, downtempo grooves through searing peaks driven by guitarist Brian Moss, Spafford displayed its versatility from the band’s home base.

Following the initial 80-minute spontaneous compositions that opened the stream, the band fired up yet another improvisational voyage. Though this one ran for a more manageable 30-minutes, it once again saw Spafford exploring the outer recesses of their cohesive group mind that has been in development for over a decade.
