Spafford Shells Out 28+ Minute "Gold Glittered Hat" Opener In Connecticut [Photos/Full Video]

Spafford rolled into The Warehouse at FTC red hot on Thursday night, opening the show in Fairfield, CT with a “Gold Glittered Hat” that neared the 30-minute mark. The concert arrives just prior to the midway point of Spafford’s winter tour, the band’s first with new keyboardist Cory Schechtman.

While “Gold Glittered Hat” represented the improvisational deep end of Thursday’s concert, Spafford rode the momentum into a lengthy “Dream Jam” to follow. The inertia propelled the band into a double-time rendition of Red Hot Chili Peppers‘ “Soul To Squeeze” ahead of the first break in the action of the evening. Bassist Jordan Fairless kept his hold on the mic for “Doghouse” before a segue into “Part II” took the band into setbreak.

A quick hit “All My Friends” kicked off the second set, seguing into “Bee Jam” and ultimately “Fake The Fate” for a nearly 25-minute stretch of uninterrupted music. The improvisational runner-up of the evening followed with a 22-minute rendition of “Broken Wing”, which detoured into Tears For Fears‘ “Mad World” ahead of a “Plans” closer.

As Spafford took the stage for the encore, guitarist Brian Moss took a moment to thank the band’s road crew. In particular, he gave a shout-out to Jaryd Smart at the merch table. Moss revealed that he and Smart actually wrote the song “Levilan Shores” together many years ago and, midway through the encore, Smart left the merch booth to deliver the track’s reggae verse.
