On Wednesday, Spafford treated fans to a previously-recorded studio session that saw the quartet stretch their legs on two songs over the course of two hours. The performance was originally recorded on November 14th at the band’s The Pound studio in Phoenix, AZ.

Though they have kept a relatively low profile since their drive-in concert back on May 24th, Spafford is gearing up to hit the stage once again later this month. The Arizona-bred quartet will play a sold-out, two-night New Year’s Eve run of pod concerts outside the Marquee Theatre in Tempe, AZ to ring in 2021.

The in-studio performance comes on slow as the band members gently glide together in the dimly lit room. After a few minutes of post-“Space” bliss, the tempo begins to build as the cohesive groove provides a telling preview of things to come. After nearly 10-minutes, Spafford arrives at the familiar snapback funk of “It’s A Bunch”, the vehicle that will carry them through the next 90-minutes of sonic exploration. With the use of a limited light show, the band is able to provide some semblance of a concert as each musician frees himself to explore the studio space with his instrument.

The “It’s A Bunch” jam, like all good things, eventually comes to an end after nearly an hour and 45 minutes of improvisation. With time for one more, Spafford fires up “Ain’t That Wrong” which runs for a comparatively-short 21 minutes. To kick off the song, Brian Moss‘ machine-gun guitar introduction breathes the energy into the studio that propels the band across the finish line and eventually brings the set to a close.
