UPDATE: February 14th, 2018: Last Halloween weekend at Suwannee Hulaween, The String Cheese Incident used their traditional Saturday Spectacle to shower the Spirit of the Suwannee crowd with love. Throughout their special set, they played a long list of songs about the power of “love” by a diverse mix of artists including Stevie Wonder, Al Green, Beck, Huey Lewis & The News, Bob Marley, Sublime, Beyoncé, Black Eyed Peas, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, and more.

In honor of Valentine’s Day today, take a look back at our original recap and videos from the String Cheese Incident’s Suwannee love-fest. Because, as the set’s closing number reminds us, “love is all you need.”

The String Cheese Incident pulled out all the stops for their Saturday headlining performances at the 2017 Suwannee Hulaween. The two afternoon sets, which featured special guest sit-ins from steel guitarist Roosevelt Collier and saxophonist Kamasi Washington during the later set, were packed full of cheese classics and fierce jams. Later in the evening, the massively anticipated “Night Of The Loving Dead Shabang” costumed extravaganza won over the Spirit of Suwannee Music Park, as love-themed covers and guest collaborators took over the main stage.

The “Night Of The Loving Dead” celebration featured covers of The Ohio Players, Stevie Wonder, Al Green, Jackie Wilson, Beck, Huey Lewis & The News, Sting, Bob Marley, Bobby Blue Band, Lenny Kravitz, SUBLIME, Beyoncé, Black Eyed Peas, Led Zeppelin, and The Beatles, with musical collaborations with vocalists Rhonda Thomas and Tony White, and the Mofro Horns.

The String Cheese Incident got the third set going with a spot-on rendition of the Ohio Players tune “Roller Coaster Of Love.” The crowd commenced to boogieing down in full force with every face showing a plastered smile of joy in the pulsing lights. Check out the fun below:

While Bobby Blue Bland may have originated it, The Grateful Dead were the ones who make “Turn On Your Lovelight” an emotional touchstone for so many fans of the genre. As such, simply firing up the song raises spirits among scene veterans and plain old folks who enjoy a good, uptempo horn tune. Watch them wind up the crowd and see them go below:

Once the theme was fully established, SCI separated the rest of the set into two extended medleys. The first medley featured old-school favorites, “I Think I’m In Love” by Beck, “The Power Of Love” by Huey Lewis & The News, “If You Love Somebody Set Them Free” by Sting, and “Is This Love” by Bob Marley. The second medley mashed together “What I Got” by Sublime, “Crazy In Love” by Beyoncé, “Where Is The Love” by Black Eyed Peas, and “Whole Lotta Love” by Led Zeppelin to close the set. Check out both massive medleys in the videos below!

“I Think I’m In Love (Beck) > The Power of Love (Huey Lewis & The News) > If You Love Somebody Set Them Free (Sting) > Is This Love (Bob Marley)”

“What I Got (Sublime) > Crazy in Love (Beyonce) > Where Is the Love (Black Eyed Peas) > Crazy in Love (Beyonce) > Whole Lotta Love (Led Zeppelin) > Crazy In Love (Beyonce)”

It was no real stretch of the imagination to guess the closing song, but you can’t go wrong with one of the greatest points ever made, The Beatles “All You Need Is Love”. Check out their take on the classic and the Halloween hi-jinks in the video below:

“All You Need Is Love”

After spending close to ninety minutes straight building the love, Cheese ended with a flourish to a waves of cheers and cries for more. Though their pleas for a second encore were to go unanswered, the fans were still riding high and spread out to disseminate their positive energy throughout the festival and, with any luck, the world itself. For spending their evening in that way, The String Cheese Incident is to be commended. The world would be a better place if we all took a chunk of our day and devoted it to spreading love to those we meet. A wonderful lesson for us all set to an awesome musical score.
