The music of The Avett Brothers will be the focus of a new musical Swept Away, set to premiere in Berkley, CA early next year. On Monday, the team behind the stage production shared a preview with a cast performance of “Murder In The City”.

Taken from The Avett Brothers’ 2008 EP The Second Gleam, the track captures the group’s vintage duo aesthetic with just acoustic guitar, banjo, and fraternal harmony. Performed by cast members Stark Sands and Adrian Blake Enscoe, the already familiar vocal melody ascends to a new register as the trained vocalists emulate Seth and Scott Avett.

A description of Swept Away reads,

1888, off the coast of New Bedford, MA. When a violent storm sinks their whaling ship, the four surviving souls—a young man in search of adventure, his older brother who has sworn to protect him, a captain at the end of a long career at sea, and a worldly first mate who has fallen from grace—each face a reckoning: How far will I go to stay alive? And can I live with the consequences?

Swept Away is set to open at the Rep’s Peet’s Theatre in Berkeley, CA on January 9th, 2022, with an initial run scheduled to last through February 13th, 2022. Tickets go on sale to the general public on October 28th with a priority on-sale beginning on October 15th.
