San Diego alt-rock band Switchfoot took to new heights over the weekend with an eight-song live set performed while 3,500 feet high in a hot air balloon. While the stream itself was a ticketed event and is not available for replay, Switchfoot has shared a clip of “Float”.
This latest stunt comes as hardly the first major change of scenery for Switchfoot. Over the pandemic, the band launched The Fantastic Not Traveling Music Show monthly livestream series. These past few months have seen Switchfoot perform from moving boats, Petco Park (home of the San Diego Padres), by the campfire, and even on an elaborate Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou-themed stage. With all of that in the rearview, it seemed the only logical way to elevate the stream was to cram into a wicker basket and fly thousands of feet in the air.

“These livestreams have been a chance for us to turn a negative into a positive. The inability to play music for a live crowd inspired us to seek out new creative ways to connect with people through music,” the band said in a statement. “Live music for us has always been an attempt to take people on a journey, to transport them to a different space, and with these livestreams, we’ve been able to take people on a radically different journey every single month. This month’s livestream was undoubtedly the most exotic and challenging space that we have ever made music in, and it was an honor to take people with us on that journey, all from the comfort of their couch.”
