On Sunday night, Tedeschi Trucks Band continued their tour at Hershey Theatre in Hershey, PA for their third show of the emotional weekend. About an hour before their show on Friday, the band learned that their forever keyboardist/flutist Kofi Burbridge passed away. Kofi had been on medical leave this year following recurring heart complications, and renowned keyboardist Gabe Dixon has been touring in 2019 in his place.

It’s been an insanely rough couple of years for Tedeschi Trucks Band, and Friday marked their triumphant comeback with the release of SIGNS, marking the band’s first record since 2016’s Let Me Get By. The extended period of time between albums was a result of the major losses experienced by the band over the last several years. During the recording process, the group lost several of their mentors: Leon Russell, Col. Bruce Hampton, and Derek Trucks’ uncle and original Allman Brothers Band drummer, Butch Trucks, followed by Gregg Allman later that year.

Tedeschi Trucks Band opened their Sunday night on a high note with “Don’t Know What It Means” and The Box Tops‘ “The Letter” following a welcoming round of applause from the grateful audience. The husband-and-wife duo then led their family band into a trio of songs from the new, celebrated record: “I’m Gonna Be There”, “When Will I Begin”, and “Walk Through This Life”. Bob Dylan‘s “Down In The Flood”, which Trucks and Burbridge recorded together with Derek Trucks Band, came next, honoring Kofi and Derek’s 20+ year career together.
Following a cover of Willie Nelson‘s “Somebody Pick Up My Pieces”, Tedeschi Trucks Band returned to their new material with “Hard Case” and “Shame” before slowing it down with a nostalgic “Midnight In Harlem”. The set approached its ending with “Part Of Me”, Bobby “Blue” Bland‘s “I Pity The Fool”, and “Get What You Deserve”. The band returned to stage for an encore with a show-closing cover of Joe Tex‘s “Show Me”.
Without a doubt, music has healing powers, and this band is living proof of that. It’s clear that their song selections and performances are in pure dedication to their fallen member, and that this tour and every tour to follow will be in memory of the music they made with the late, great Kofi Burbridge.
