On Friday night, Tedeschi Trucks Band returned to The Beacon Theatre in New York, NY for the penultimate performance of their six-night residency.

The band’s first of two sets of Friday featured a number of rarities from the early portion of their catalog. After opening with the second 2019 rendition of Made Up Mind track “All That I Need” and the second “Signs, High Times” of this Beacon run, the band threw it back to their first album, 2011’s Revelator, for performances of “Until You Remember” (just the third of the year), “Simple Things” (the first since last year’s Beacon run), and “Learn How To Love You” (the first since 2018).

Next, vocalist Mike Mattison stepped to the mic to lead a rendition of his own “Life Is Crazy”, a song that’s become a staple at TTB shows this year. After working through The Lovin’ Spoonful‘s “Darlin’ Be Home Soon”, Derek TrucksSusan Tedeschi, and company closed out set one with “Still Your Mind” and Little Milton‘s “More and More”.

After a brief intermission, Tedeschi Trucks Band once again kicked off their second set with an acoustic mini-set, turning the cavernous theater show into a special, intimate affair. To start, they worked through the somber yet uplifting “Strengthen What Remains” from their 2019 album, Signs. The biggest bust-out of the night followed in the form of the band’s first rendition of the traditional “Keep Your Lamp Trimmed and Burning” since their 2015 Beacon residency. The third-ever TTB rendition of Derek and the Dominos‘s “I Am Yours” was up next, followed by a pair of rarely-played blues classics. First, “Done Somebody Wrong” (last played 10/13/18) served as a nod to the Allman Brothers Band, who played the song many times in that room over the years. Then, the band dusted off Tampa Red‘s “It Hurts Me Too” for the first time in almost three years (last played 10/7/16).

From there, the band retooled their usual electric setup and kicked the set into high gear with a red-hot cover of Dr. John‘s “I Walk On Guilded Splinters”. A spirited “Bound For Glory” came next (featuring an impressive vocal solo by Alecia Chakour), followed by another Derek and the Dominos favorite and live TTB mainstay, “Keep On Growing”. Finally, powerful readings of Bobby “Blue” Bland‘s “I Pity The Fool” and Let Me Get By favorite “I Want More”.

With time for a couple more, the band returned for their encore with keyboardist Deshawn D’Vibes Alexander and guitarist Adam Minkoff tow for their go-to Sly & The Family Stone pairing of “Sing A Simple Song” > “I Want To Take You Higher” to cap a memorable evening at the Beacon.
