The superstar husband-and-wife tandem of Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi, brought their unstoppable 12-piece band back to the illustrious Beacon Theatre on Tuesday for a blues-centric performance on the ongoing residency’s fourth of seven nights.

The combination of the Yankees Wild Card game and the upcoming TTB show had the Upper West Side streets buzzing more than a Zabar’s sale. Unlike the Yankees, however, Tedeschi Trucks Band never loses.

Anders Osborne performed a selection of new originals during his opening set before the headlining act stepped onstage for a condensed, one-set performance. After opening with The Beatles’ “I’ve Got a Feeling”, TTB fired on all cylinders through a brass-heavy rendition of “Don’t Know What It Means” from 2016’s Let Me Get By. To follow, Susan’s powerful vocals led the band through a scorching-hot take on The Box Tops’ “The Letter”. The tune was covered by Joe Cocker for Mad Dogs & Englishmen and has been a staple of TTB’s live catalog ever since their Mad Dogs tribute set at LOCKN’ 2015.

Returning to the band’s 2011 debut album, Revelator, “Until You Remember” featured soaring vocals from Susan and solos from Gabe Dixon’s keyboard and Derek Trucks’ slide. Mike Mattison’s gravelly vocals took center stage for “Down Don’t Bother Me”, which was released on Derek Trucks Band’s 2009 album, Already Free.

Susan and Derek wielded dueling guitars for a rare cover of Delaney & Bonnie’s “Comin’ Home”, touching on yet another segment of Eric Clapton‘s creative web. An emotionally charged tribute to fallen brother and bandmate, Kofi Burbridge, followed with Gabe Dixon’s piano building a moving “Still Your Mind”.

The saxophone skills of Kebbi Williams went toe to toe with the prodigious Derek Trucks on “Part of Me” before the man with the SG crushed a standout performance of The Rolling Stones’ “You Got the Silver”, which featured Mike Mattison on acoustic guitar.

The intensity peaked as the introductory organ riffs of Fenton Robinson’s “Loan Me a Dime” emanated from the depths of Gabe Dixon’s rig. A Boz Scaggs version of the tune was famously featured on the Duane Allman: An Anthology album, and last night marked just the second time that TTB played this song following its debut in the same building seven years ago. Mattison’s vocals cut like the jagged glass of a broken whiskey bottle as Dixon’s organ wistfully conversed with Trucks’ guitar.

The hard-hitting musical madness continued with another return to the DTB repertoire,“Joyful Noise”, bleeding into John Coltrane’s “Afro Blue” and, in turn, a monstrous “Shame”. Both Derek Trucks and bassist Brandon Boone carved massive solos during this powerful “Shame while Susan’s haunting voice harmonized with the backup singers.

Winding down the lengthy set, Bobby “Blue” Bland’s “That Did It” gave Susan another chance to shred before “Made Up Mind” finished out the main event with one last Trucks solo and some robust Mark Rivers vocals.

Returning for encore, Mike Mattison and Susan’s voices led the rest of the band through a cover of Derek and the Dominos’ “Anyday”. To truly close out the night with a bang, sporadic bursts shot forth from Elizabeth Lea’s trombone, slowly ending the encore.

Tedeschi Trucks Band returns to the Upper West Side to add to a long, winding history at the Beacon tonight, Wednesday, October 6th, with Jorma Kaukonen. For a full list of upcoming dates, head here.
