Tedeschi Trucks Band hosted its curated Sun, Sand and Soul weekend in Florida where the band collaborated with Bonnie Raitt. After TTB welcomed the singer-songwriter during its headlining set on Thursday, Raitt returned the favor the following night by bringing out Susan Tedeschi.

Tedeschi Trucks Band opened Sun, Sand and Soul at the Seascape Golf Course in Miramar Beach, FL on Thutsday, bringing out Raitt near the end of the single-set performance. The 13-time Grammy winner embraced her blues roots as she joined TTB on Sleepy John Estes‘ “Leaving Trunk”. Singer Mike Mattison set the stage with his smoky vocals before Raitt, Tedeschi, and Derek Trucks locked into a swampy guitar dialogue.

Not stopping for a moment, “Leaving Trunk” led into the familiar stomping rhythm of Rahsaan Roland Kirk‘s “Volunteered Slavery”. While it was surely difficult to find sonic space for more guitar between Tedeschi and Trucks, Raitt was an equal participant as she added stringed harmonies and supporting slide playing while the song snowballed into a feverish jam.

On Friday night, Raitt headlined Sun, Sand and Soul, closing out the daily lineup that also included Cory Wong and Grace Bowers & The Hodge Podge. During her set, Raitt brought out Tedeschi to harmonize on her trademark cover of John Prine‘s “Angel From Montgomery”. The track is also a staple of Tedeschi Trucks Band’s shows—often paired with the Grateful Dead‘s “Sugaree”—and the two singers’ familiarity with the cover shone through on this beautiful version.
