Tedeschi Trucks Band on Thursday returned to the familiar confines of The Capitol Theatre for the first of a three-night run. The weekend affair will see the Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi-led 12-piece perform in Port Chester, NY Thursday through Saturday.
Starting off with a pair of originals in “Let Me Get By” and “Just as Strange”, the first of many covers came in the form of The Box Tops‘ “The Letter”. Vocalist Mike Mattison then took center stage for his original composition “Life Is Crazy” ahead of a rendition of Delaney & Bonnie‘s “Comin’ Home”. Interspersed with loving tributes to Derek and the Dominos, Elmore James, and Dan Penn came some more TTB tunes with “Do I Look Worried” and “Whiskey Legs”.
As the show wound down, Tedeschi Trucks Band delivered back-to-back cherished covers with Susan’s seminal rendition of John Prine‘s “Angel From Montgomery”, ahead of a powerful “Helpless” by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. The main set then came to a close following Charles Segar‘s “Key to the Highway” and finally “Idle Wind”. TTB finished off its first night at The Cap with a double encore of “It Hurt So Bad” and Joe Tex‘s “Show Me”.
