The third night of Tedeschi Trucks Band at the Beacon Theatre presented a slew of surprises as an uncharacteristic May residency allowed the 12-piece blues rock juggernaut more time to work on new material. Tedeschi Trucks Band has been shedding light on its unannounced forthcoming project and kicked off the Beacon residency with “Future Soul” on night one, which reappeared Tuesday as an encore. However, outside of this tune, the band retraced the weathered path from its earliest days, including four songs from its debut album, 2011’s Revelator, as well as songs from Derek Trucks Band and Susan Tedeschi’s solo work.

Buddy Guy and his five-piece band opened the show with heavy blues rock interjected with jokes, sometimes raunchy and other times sweet, and a flair for antics while performing. Buddy started out playing “How Blue Can You Get” before blending “Sunshine of Your Love” and “Take Me to the River” and ultimately interrupting himself with a heartfelt story.

Buddy retold how he lied to his mama after she suffered a stroke, saying that he was moving to Chicago to make some money and buy her polka dot convertible. “She passed before I was able to do that,” he admitted, feeling guilty, “but here I am in this polka dot shirt because she loved polka dots!” He then invited his son, Greg Guy, onstage for a generational blues guitar showdown.

As the massive 12-piece ensemble shuffled onstage, the lights dimmed before Derek and the Dominos‘ “Keep On Growing” broke the silence. Susan Tedeschi and TTB’s multi-faceted vocalists echoed soaring harmonies, while Derek Trucks dug into an early solo. Not long after, Mike Mattison approached the front of the stage to belt out a DTB classic, “Get What You Deserve”.

“Don’t Let Me Slide”, the first of four Revelator songs, showcased bassist Brandon Boone answering Susan Tedeschi’s vocals with cohesive force. Pausing before the next song, Susan—a self-proclaimed Boston Celtics fan—prompted a round of applause for the New York Knicks, “Let’s give it up for the Knicks tomorrow!” The Knicks have New York City spellbound by competing in the Eastern Conference Final for the first time in 25 years this week against their long-time rival, the Indianapolis Pacers. A Patrick Ewing jersey hung over her amplifier, and the New York crowd responded with riotous applause.

Fast forward to Wednesday night, and Derek and Susan spent their night off courtside at the Knicks game with Trucks’ former Allman Brothers Band bandmate Warren Haynes. While Tedeschi, Trucks, and Haynes got a front row seat to the Knicks stumbling to lose a 14-point lead with less than three minutes remaining (breaking a record of teams going 994-0 when leading by at least 14 with 2:45 left), the Knicks live to fight another game and will return to Madison Square Garden on Friday during TTB’s fifth night at the Beacon.

Back to Tuesday’s show, after waiting for the crowd to settle down following the Knicks endorsement, Gabe Dixon accompanied Susan on a starlit stroll among the stars for a scintillating duet, “I Am The Moon”. Once the backing vocal harmonies dissolved into silence, the second Revelator tune, “Learn How To Love”, followed and featured a Kebbi Williams saxophone solo. Derek Trucks took the last licks, eventually winding down the song.

The setlist delved further into 2022’s I Am The Moon as “La Di Da” eclipsed into “Gravity”, led by Gabe Dixon’s piano and vocals. Exchanging solos, Susan took lead for the former and passed the baton to Derek for a sliding solo during the latter. Brandon Boone then swapped basses and hunkered down for a rowdy cover of Blind Faith’s “Had to Cry Today”.

Appropriately, Susan retook the helm to slow down the tempo for an emotive performance of “Just Won’t Burn” from her 1998 solo album of the same name. Mike Mattison returned to the front for a funky cover of Prince’s “D.M.S.R.” This marked the cover’s eleventh appearance but first since a private show on November 18th, 2024, per Setlist.fm.

TTB separated two more Revelator fan favorites with a voodoo-infused cover of Dr. John’s “I Walk on Guilded Splinters”. “Midnight in Harlem” slowly rumbled down the tracks like a local subway train, with Derek Trucks firing up the old locomotive engine with a pure slide guitar solo. One particular note was bent so high that it squealed piercingly through the venue, causing many audience members to gasp aloud as if they were seeing fireworks.

Mike Mattison took the vanguard on Dr. John’s “I Walk on Guilded Splinters”, and with a quartet of singers backing, the vocal melodies possessed a spectral sound. With his slide in hand, Derek Trucks added his own signature flavor to the intoxicating New Orleans brew.

Gabe Dixon’s organ introduced the fourth and final Revelator track, closing the set with “Bound For Glory”. Mike Mattison and Alecia Chakour both had a chance to show off their powerful pipes before one last sliding Derek solo wrapped up the song and set.

Not quite done, TTB returned for a three-song encore with its new material hot off the press. Susan Tedeschi blazed through each riff of new Tedeschi Trucks Band cut “Future Soul” while singing. Derek, on the other hand, sang with his guitar and cleaved through each measure with a flurry of notes. Mark Rivers stepped up to ease into James Taylor’s “Fire and Rain” (LTP 8/3/24) and gave Derek a run for his money during a call-and-response duet between Mark’s voice and Derek’s slide and SG. The emotionally wrought James Taylor cover was the pinnacle of emotion in a show filled with it, coming just one day after Tedeschi’s father’s death. Throughout the show, Susan channeled her grief through her playing and singing, particularly on spiritually weighted songs like “Fire and Rain” and the earlier “Had to Cry Today”.

Capping off the third night of TTB’s residency, Susan led the 12-piece band and audience through Matthew Moore’s “Space Captain”, calling back memories of TTB’s homage to Mad Dogs and the Englishmen at LOCKN’ 2015. After one last duel between Elizabeth Lea’s trombone and Emmanuel Echem‘s trumpet, combining forces to stand tall in the face of Trucks’ slide guitar, the show ended.

As the band shuffled offstage, Susan Tedeschi picked up the Patrick Ewing New York Knicks’ jersey from her amp and threw it over her head to rowdy applause. Stepping to the microphone, Susan bravely admitted, “They took out my Celtics so now I have to root for the Knicks.” She thanked the audience and reminded them that TTB will be back onstage of the Beacon for the second half of its residency on Thursday (5/22), Friday (5/23), and Saturday (5/24). In the words of Susan Tedeschi, “Let’s go Knicks, go get it!”
