Tedeschi Trucks Band continued the rollout of its audio-visual epic I Am The Moon on Friday with the release of I Am The Moon: Episode III. The Fall. The third album of the monumental four-album project dropped three days after the band premiered its accompanying film and the same night they kicked off a sold-out two-night run at Red Rocks Amphitheater Morrison, CO.
Drawing inspiration from the 12th century poem about lovers Layla and Majnun, band members Susan Tedeschi, Mike Mattison, and Gabe Dixon took the lead on songwriting for The Fall. The album opens with “Somehow”, a laid-back grooving tune brimming with soulful grit. “None Above”, composed by Mattison and Tedeschi, maintains a hymn-like grace, and Tedeschi’s “Yes We Will” highlights the songwriter’s blues roots. Dixon’s “Gravity”, which was cowritten with Oliver Wood, has a New Orleans flavor, while Mattison’s waltz ballad “Emmaline” offers reflections on departed friends and loved ones inspired in part by the loss of long-time keyboardist Kofi Burbridge, who passed away in 2019. “Take Me As I Am” caps off the album with a slow and poignant plea for acceptance.
In an industry constantly questioning the value of albums, I Am The Moon stands as a testament to the artistic vision of Tedeschi Trucks Band and proves that ambitious projects can still pay off in a streaming-dominated world.
