Last night, Tedeschi Trucks Band‘s 2017 “Wheels of Soul” tour featuring The Wood Brothers and Hot Tuna kept on rolling into Rochester, NY for a Saturday night performance at Highland Bowl. With the band hitting their stride as the tour picks up momentum, they kicked off the show with a cover of Sly & The Family Stone‘s “Are You Ready?,” inviting the crowd along with them on the evening’s rocking journey. “Made Up Mind” and “Don’t Know What It Means” followed, before Derek Trucks led the way an extended “Anyday,” featuring a jam on The Allman Brothers Band‘s “Blue Sky.”

Susan Tedeschi took the reins next for a slow and sweet rendition of “Midnight In Harlem. From there, the band launched into an lively reading of Allen Toussaint‘s “Get Out Of My Life, Woman,” which saw the percussion section get their turn in the spotlight with an extended drum solo. “Let Me Get By” followed, and gave the crowd a chance to get acquainted with the considerable chops of substitute keyboardist Carey Frank (get well soon, Kofi!).

Next, after thanking the crowd and giving love to tour-mates The Wood Brothers and Hot Tuna, Susan welcomed out Chris (bass) and Oliver Wood (guitar, vocals) for a folksy rendition of Rolling Stones favorite “Sweet Virginia,” a Tedeschi Trucks Band debut. The guest spots continued from there, as Jorma KaukonenJack Casady, and Justin Guip joined the band for a gritty run through blues standard “Sky Is Crying.” Finally, the band closed things down with a free-wheeling “I Wish I Knew” set closer and a red-hot “I Want More” encore, featuring “Les Brers” teases from Trucks.

As the “Wheels of Soul” roll on, Tedeschi Trucks Band continues to affirm their stature as one of the best live bands bands on the road today. Watching this immensely talented collection of musicians come together to form something greater–and more soulful–than the sum of their parts is truly a wonder to behold. Do yourself a favor: don’t miss this tour. You can thank us later.
