After linking up late last month in Virginia, Tedeschi Trucks Band and Ziggy Marley made their way up the East Coast before backtracking down to Bridgeport, CT for a show at Hartford Healthcare Amphitheater on Friday.

Though quite different stylistically, the two acts make for a potent pairing, each bringing music that speaks to the human soul in its own way. Both acts also are deeply rooted in family, with Ziggy Marley following in the footsteps of his father Bob Marley and Derek Trucks carrying on the legacy of his uncle Butch and the Allman Brothers Band.

TTB played a number covers including two songs recently debuted at the start of the band’s summer tour, the show-opening “Woman to Woman” by Joe Cocker and “Keep On Smilin'” by Wet Willie. The set also featured “Statesboro Blues” by Blind Willie McTell, “Keep On Growing” by Derek and the Dominos, “Outside Woman Blues” by Blind Joe Reynolds, “Got My Mojo Workin'” by Muddy Waters, and a sequence of “Leaving Trunk” by Sleepy John Estes into “Volunteered Slavery” by Rahsaan Roland Kirk.

Amongst the covers were selections from the band’s recent four-part audio-visual epic, I Am The Moon, including “Playing With My Emotions”, “I Am the Moon”, “Where Are My Friends?”, “Ain’t That Something”, “Take Me as I Am”, and “Soul Sweet Song”, as well as other originals like “Shame”, “Part of Me”, and “Bound For Glory”. For the encore, the band busted out “Sing a Simple Song / I Want to Take You Higher” by Sly & the Family Stone for the first time this year.
