R&B pioneers The Temptations have released a new cover of contemporary crooner The Weeknd’s breakout 2015 hit “Earned It”. The Temptations’ guitar-heavy version will be included on the vocal group’s forthcoming album, All the Time, along with a number of other covers of relatively recent hits.

The Temptations – “Earned It” (The Weeknd cover)

“I’m often asked, ‘Otis, what do you think about the music of today?'” Otis Williams, the only surviving member of the original Temptations lineup, told Rolling Stone. “Understand, I’m from the school of Motown, where great songs were written, produced, performed, structured daily. I don’t want to rain on anyone’s parade, but I’m really not impressed with some of the stuff I hear on the radio.”

However, Williams doesn’t feel that way about “Earned It”, a tune that originally appeared on the Fifty Shades of Grey soundtrack. “That’s one I love,” he told the publication. “At first when I heard it on the radio, I was like, ‘Who the hell is that?'”

The Temptations—currently comprised of Williams, Ron Tyson, Terry Weeks, Larry Braggs, and Willie Greene—will release All The Time on Friday, May 4th. The record will feature additional covers of John Mayer’s “Still Feel Like Your Man”, Sam Smith’s “Stay With Me”, Ed Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Load”, Maxell’s “Pretty Wings”, Bruno Mars’ “When I Was Your Man,” and Michael Jackson’s “Remember The Time”.
