Tenacious D recently stopped by The Howard Stern Show to perform a medley of songs from The Who‘s album Tommy, including “Pinball Wizard”, “There’s a Doctor”, and “Smart the Mirror”.

“This one is for Howard Stern, the King of All Media, the original Pinball Wizard,” Jack Black proclaimed before rocking out with his musical partner Kyle Gass.

Stern explained that the comedy rock duo visited the show’s studios in Los Angeles after hearing the radio host compliment their “incredible” Beatles tribute, which was released in 2021 to benefit Doctors Without Borders. “And they did a medley of Who songs for us,” he said. “I watched it seven times last night. That’s how good it is.”

Stern went on to call the pair “a good f–cking combo,” adding, “I can see why they’re into each other. They seem to have a lot of fun.” He also suggested that if he were ever inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, he would want Jack Black to do the honors.

The Who medley Tenacious D performed is part of the band’s 2022’s covers-for-charity project. Like previous songs, the medley was released as a limited edition 7” vinyl, with all proceeds benefiting Everytown For Gun Safety. A video for the medley was directed by Liam Lynch, who co-wrote and directed the band’s 2006 film The Pick Of Destiny.

“Who better to deliver a tribute to the greatest rock opera of all times? Who? The D! That’s Who!!” said Tenacious D. “We’ve been working on this medley for 20 years. It’s finally ready to be unleashed. Crank it. It’s a humdinger. Enjoy.”
