On Saturday, December 26th, 50+ artists and hundreds of thousands of viewers around the world came together for Georgia Comes Alive, a virtual music festival aimed at promoting voter participation in Georgia’s Senate runoff elections on January 5th, 2021, which saw a record-breaking voter turnout.
One of the many acts with Georgia ties to take part in Georgia Comes Alive was The Allman Betts Band who performed original track “Pale Horse Rider”. Comprised of the offspring of members of The Allman Brothers Band—including Gregg Allman‘s son Devon Allman, Dickey Betts‘ son Duane Betts, and Berry Oakley‘s son Berry Oakley Jr.—the group is second-generation Georgia rock royalty.
Not a group to simply ride the coattails of their fathers’ success, however, The Allman Betts Band have forged their own path with a pair of original records, including 2020’s Bless Your Heart. They never forget where they came from and often frequently cover The Allman Brothers despite their divergent path, but audiences are just as likely to hear songs by the Grateful Dead or Tom Petty at an Allman Betts Band show as they are to hear ones written by core members’ fathers.
Even in their original music, the deep-seated spirit of The Allman Brothers Band still flows through the Allman Betts Band, and “Pale Horse Rider” is no exception. From the beautifully crafted Dickey-esque dueling guitar riff to Devon Allman’s rough vocal growl that evokes images of Gregg, The Allman Betts Band carries the traditions of Macon, GA to a new generation.
