Over the weekend The Avett Brothers released the second single to appear on the band’s forthcoming The Third Gleam album, entitled “I Go To My Heart”.

On The Third Gleam, The Avett Brothers are returning to their early roots as an acoustic group comprised of brothers Seth and Scott Avett beside bassist Bob Crawford. The album acts as the third installment of The Gleam series, which saw its first release in 2006 and The Second Gleam in 2008.

Just like in the video for the album’s lead single, “Victory“, fans find the Avetts joined by Crawford as they all perform the song acoustically in a woodshed. Filmed in black and white, the video itself serves to reinforce the back-to-basics approach that the now-trio has pledged to pursue for the tracks on The Third Gleam.

As for the song itself, Scott takes lead vocals on a lyrical journey of love lost and the search for redemption, familiar themes reminiscent of previous albums like 2007’s Emotionalism. Punctuated by a whistling melody, Scott sings of feelings also applicable to the group’s refocused identity, “I promise I have changed I’ve been gone for years/And know but I am back for good to show/That I will never stray from you again.” Further, he even addresses the issue of identity as the band has experienced the full gamut of fame over the years in singing, “Who am I without dark hair and a pair of working hands?”

“I Go To My Heart” Lyrics

What do I get when I find out I am nothing?

Who am I without my name?

How do I stop this emptiness from growing?

The dumb instructions coming from my brain

I go to my heart or my knees

Begging ‘take me darling please’

I will follow you

I promise I have changed I’ve been gone for years and know but I am back for good to show

That I will never stray from you like that again

What do I do when my body lets me down?

Who am I without dark hair and a pair of working hands?

How do I stop this outtro that I’m heading for?

Where do I turn when I can’t take it anymore?

I go to my heart or my knees

Begging ‘take me darling please’

I will follow you

I promise I have changed I been gone for years and know but I am back for good to show

I will never stray from you like that again

No I will never stray from you like that again
