One-half of The Beatles may have departed this world, but the surviving members are preparing to release a new song, “Now and Then”, featuring all four of them. Written and sung by the late John Lennon, developed and worked on by Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, and the late George Harrison, and now finally completed by Paul and Ringo, the track, due out on Thursday, November 2nd via Apple Corps Ltd./Capitol/UMe, is being promoted as “the last Beatles song.”

Considering The Beatles‘ universal acclaim, zeitgeist-shifting influence, and staggering musical productivity, it’s easy to understand why they are considered by many to be the greatest band of all time. But those same reasons make it easy to forget that The Fab Four’s run as a unit was extremely short-lived. The band began to coalesce in Liverpool, England in 1960, drummer Ringo Starr wasn’t added until 1962, and they didn’t record their first album, Please Please Me, until 1963. By the time they called it quits amid intra-band tension in 1970, the Beatles had released 12 studio albums (each of them critical and commercial successes, each one successively evolving and expanding in scope and style), thrown the youth of the world into a literal frenzy, and established themselves not only as iconic musicians, but as highly influential cultural figures during an unprecedented period of turmoil and rebellion. And they did all of that in less than eight years. Now, many decades after the previous “last” Beatles release, 1970’s Let It Be. 53 years later, with two members now gone to mortality, the “Now and Then” will add a new coda to the band’s iconic run.

“Now and Then” is scheduled to arrive as part of a double A-side single that pairs the track with the Beatles’ 1962 debut U.K. single, “Love Me Do”, a fitting, full-circle counterpart to the band’s final song. Both songs are mixed in stereo and Dolby AtmosÒ, and the release features original cover art by renowned artist Ed Ruscha. The new music video for “Now And Then” will debut on Friday, November 3th.

A 12-minute Now And Then – The Last Beatles Song documentary film, written and directed by Oliver Murray, will debut on November 1st. The film’s global online premiere will be hosted on The Beatles’ YouTube channel at 7:30 p.m. GMT / 3:30 p.m. EDT / 12:30 p.m. PDT. The poignant short film tells the story behind the last Beatles song, with exclusive footage and commentary from Paul, Ringo, George, Sean Ono Lennon, and Peter Jackson. The trailer is available to watch now.

“When we lost John, we knew that it was really over,” McCartney says in the trailer for a short film chronicling the making of the song.

“I was talking to Yoko [Ono, Lennon’s widow], and she said, ‘Ah, I think I’ve got a tape of John.'” Ringo adds. “Paul called me up and said he’d like to work on ‘Now and Then’. He put the bass on, I put the drums on.”

“It’s the last song that my dad and Paul and George and Ringo will get to make together,” Sean Ono Lennon adds. “How lucky was I to have those men in my life?” Paul adds.
