The Disco Biscuits revived their tradition of playing along to a movie during their show on Saturday, providing a live score to the 1997 sci-fi box office smash The Fifth Element after fans voted on what movie to feature over the past few weeks.

After warming up The Caverns in Pelham, TN on Friday night, The Disco Biscuits kicked off night two with a jam- and segue-heavy first set comprised of “Why We Dance” and a continuous sequence of “Freebis Slinky” > “Shocked” > “Great Abyss” > “Who’s in Charge” with an average runtime of 15 minutes per song. Then, upon returning for set two, fans eagerly awaited the grand reveal as a large projector screen behind the band showed the opening of The Fifth Element.

The Fifth Element is a 1997 sci-fi action film starring Bruce Willis, whose character, a flying taxicab driver and former special forces major in the distant future, is tasked with saving the world from an evil space monster that appears every 5,000 years with the help of a genetically engineered perfect being name Leeloo, played by Milla Jovovich.

The Disco Biscuits’ tradition of performing live movie scores began back in 1999 when the band played along to Katsuhiro Otomo‘s anime masterpiece Akira on New Year’s Eve. Not long after, during a 2001 Halloween run through the Pacific Northwest, the band performed a series of improvised scores to Alice In Wonderland (10/31), It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown (11/1), Koyaanisqatsi (11/2), and Run Lola Run (11/3). Most recently, the band revived the tradition 16 years after it began, scoring a live soundtrack to the original 1982 Tron for their third set on New Year’s Eve 2015.

For their latest live movie soundtrack, The Disco Biscuits gave fans the ability to choose between six films: Jim Henson‘s 1986 cult classic Labyrinth starring David Bowie, seminal 1997 anime Princess Mononoke, sprawling 2006 documentary series Planet Earth, 2000 kung fu classic Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, 1997 sci-fi box office smash The Fifth Element, and finally Ridley Scott‘s 1982 landmark dystopian thriller Blade Runner. Fans also had the option to write in a film of their choice. The band did not reveal the winner until the start of second set on Saturday.

The Disco Biscuits closed the Fifth Element set with a 17-minute “One Chance to Save the World” and capped off the evening with a “Helicopters” encore.
