File this under ‘R’ for random, but The Flaming Lips have teamed up with automaker Hyundai for a sixty second Super Bowl commercial, featuring the Hyundai Santa Fe crossover SUV, and a new original song by The Flaming Lips, entitled ‘Sun Blows Up Today’. Estimates say the commercial will cost more than 3 million dollars to air during the game.
The commercial sees The Flaming Lips join a family at their breakfast table, where they decide to take their kids on a magical playdate. They raid a museum, race a motorcycle gang, get chased by a peacock, and even take a ride the The Flaming Lips’ Wayne Coyne’s famous giant balloons. The new song, ‘Sun Blows Up Today’, serves as the soundtrack and is classic upbeat, bubblegum Flaming Lips.
Billboard.com exclusive debuted the video along with some information from Hyundai VP of marketing Steve Shannon, who claimed The Flaming Lips were on a “very short list” of bands to be featured in the commercial, eventually getting the spot when it was clear the band would be releasing an album April 2. Hyundai will also help promote the album, entitled The Terror, by giving away 100,000 free track downloads, sponsoring a lyric video, and creating 30-second radio ads.
