The Neville Brothers perform “Hey Mama (Wild Tchoupitoulas)” at one of their final appearances in newly released audio. Out via Petaluma Records, the track will appear on the forthcoming Take Me To The River: New Orleans soundtrack.
In addition to The Nevill Brothers Aaron, Cyril, Art, and Charles, the live cut also features Ivan Neville, Ian Neville, George Porter Jr., Big Sam, and Terence Higgins. From the opening kick drum and somebody jokingly saying “more cowbell,” the Wild Tchoupitoulas cover is a party. As the rhythm section jumps in, “Hey Mama” turns into an all-out fire on the bayou.
“The Neville Brothers’ last recording and performance was a once in a lifetime experience, and it really shows in the recording and in the film,” Take Me To The River: New Orleans director Martin Shore said. “You feel the joy, you feel the love, and how special it was to have Ian and Ivan together with their fathers and uncles. Words can’t describe it. Truly epic. The Neville Family is New Orleans music royalty, period.”
Take Me To The River: New Orleans serves as a follow-up to Shore’s original 2014 documentary on Memphis, Take Me To The River. The film’s soundtrack will host new material from Snoop Dogg, Jon Batiste, PJ Morton, G-Eazy, Big Freedia, Galactic, Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah, Dumpstaphunk, William Bell, Ani DiFranco, Donald Harrison, and Ledisi. The 36-track collection will also feature new recordings from one of Dr. John’s last studio sessions.
