Theo Katzman stopped by the Paste Magazine studios to play a selection of songs from his latest album, Modern Johnny Sings: Songs In The Age Of Vibe.

The Vulfpeck multi-instrumentalist was joined by his solo band, which includes fellow Vulfpeck member Joe Dart on bass, Dawes‘ Trevor Menear on guitar and Lee Pardini on keys, and drummer Jordan Rose. The group began their studio performance for Paste with “You Could Be President”. Before launching into the song, Katzman introduced the politically-charged number by delicately tip-toeing around the song’s namesake, and referring to “good rewards for bad behavior” around the world. The song’s funky, laid-back groove almost makes a listener forget about the song’s underlying political and moral messages, until Katzman delivers lines like “To take your seat in the captain’s chair/Lord knows the golden rule ain’t gonna get you there.”

The band continued with two more selections from Modern Johnny Sings, as Katzman and company slowed things down with the tender “Fog In The Mirror” as the entire ensemble displayed their range of styles. Finally, the band closed the set by the disco-funk groove of “The Death Of Us”, where once again dour lyrics were masked by infectious vibes and Katzman took a spin on the talk-box.
