The single is the second release from It Is What It Is, after “Black Qualls“, but is the first to showcase Thundercat alone, as the first single featured Steve Lacy and Steve Arrington. “Dragonball Durag” displays Thundercat back in his element of baby-making funk as he fluctuates between insecure vulnerability, “how do I look in my durag?/would you tell me the truth?”, and masculine bravado, “I’ma keep on all my chains, when I’m making love to you.” Musically, Cat weaves together layered vocal textures as he overdubs his own falsetto to harmonize with himself. As the video notes, “Dragonball Durag” is “100% Thundercat”.
“It’s imperative. I guess the best way to describe it is either you got one or you don’t,” Thundercat said in an interview. “If David Beckham met the Prince in a durag, we’re not playing no games. You gotta have a durag in your wardrobe.”
