Bassist extraordinaire Thundercat has announced the forthcoming release of his brand new album. Drunk, due out on February 24th via Flying Lotus’ eclectic Brainfeeder record label, will serve as a follow-up to 2015’s The Beyond / Where the Giants Roam.
In coordination with this announcement, Thundercat has released a brand new song from the record called “What A Fool Believes.” The single is a silky smooth and funky R&B ballad that harkens back to an older era. It features two out-of-left-field guest appearances from Kenny Loggins and Michael McDonald. What should be a bizarre pairing turns out to be a great fit, as their soulful vocals are a perfect match for Thundercat’s sultry and soulful track.
In an interview with Red Bull Music Academy, Thundercat explained that Loggins and McDonald are “guys that I’ve listened to and where I felt that I’ve learned that honesty in music.” He called Kenny Loggins “one of my favorite singers,” and spoke highly of McDonald’s creative output in the studio, explaining that “one of the most beautiful moments of it was realizing how amazing Michael McDonald was. He would go through so many ideas and have so much to offer.”
