While there isn’t much live music going on these days, at least for the members of Phish, that didn’t stop Trey Anastasio from celebrating a pair of anniversaries this week. January 31st and February 1st marked exactly one year since Trey Anastasio Band‘s two-night run at The Civic Theatre in New Orleans, milestones the band celebrated with the release of “Set Your Soul Free” from the 31st as well as “Love Is What We Are” and “Push On ‘Til Day” from the 1st. This two-night run at the NOLA venue marked the end of TAB’s winter tour.

Though not much of a jam vehicle, this “Set Your Soul Free” was brimming with energy as the train pulled into the station at the end of set two. Clocking in at a modest six-minute runtime, the song acts as a microcosm that allows everyone to get their hands on the ball between the furious percussive duo of Russ Lawton and Cyro Baptista, Ray Paczkowski‘s grab-the-skunk-by-the-tail organ playing, and the angelic choir of James Casey, Natalie Cressman, and Jennifer Hartswick.

As for “Love Is What We Are”, the funky reggae beat and positive message of the song’s lyrics delivered a much-needed upbeat bounce. As the music industry draws ever-closer to the one-year anniversary of the shutdown of live events, Trey’s understated lyrics remind us all of what is truly important in this world. Later on, set one comes to a close with “Push On ‘Til The Day” where Trey becomes a Big Red ball of energy that simply can’t stand still as he dances across the stage.
