Trey Anastasio & Page McConnell Perform "Theme From The Bottom" At Circle Strings Guitar Company [Watch]

Trey Anastasio got a belated birthday present from his Phish bandmate Page McConnell over the weekend in the form of a custom acoustic guitar from Circle Strings. The two stopped by the Burlington guitar shop to thank the team behind the instrument and deliver a performance of “Theme From The Bottom”.

Store owner Adam Buchwald shared the saga on Instagram, highlighting the wholesome gift exchange from one friend to another. Page had previously contracted the team of luthiers to build Trey the custom instrument, prompting Anastasio to stop by Circle Strings to personally thank the craftsmen before leaving town for Phish’s fall tour dates.

“Aside from my wedding day and children being born, Friday was one of the best days of my life,” Buchwald shared. “We had the pleasure of having Trey Anastasio and Page McConnell of Phish stop by the shop. Over the past few months we have been secretly making Trey a guitar from Page for a birthday gift. I went into the private stock and picked out the nicest Koa and German Spruce we had. Page gave him the guitar on Friday and Trey loved it so much he came to the shop to meet and play it for us before jetting out of town.”

Buchwald noted that Trey has been a guitar hero of his for 25 years, and the Phish frontman was even kind enough to recreate a photo the two took together when Buchwald was just 17.

“I’d like to thank Page McConnell for the opportunity to make this happen and especially thank my dream team of a crew,” Buchwald continued. “We all had a part in this guitar and it feels damn good to share it with you all. I’m so lucky to work with such talented and driven luthiers.”

As if an in-shop visit from Anastasio and McConnell wasn’t enough, the two conducted an impromptu performance for the team. Trey got to try out his new guitar while Page joined in acapella for a casual performance of “Theme From The Bottom”.
