On Saturday night, Trey Anastasio Trio continued their tour, finishing up a two-night run at the Chicago Theatre. With two night’s scheduled in at this historic Chicago venue, the trio of guitarist Trey Anastasio, bassist Tony Markellis, and drummer Russ Lawton had the opportunity to settle into the venue and offer up an expanded collection of takes from Anastasio’s catalog. Offering up nine tour debuts, the performance saw a healthy mix of Trey Anastasio Band staples coupled with relative rarities for the trio/band.

Starting things off with “46 Days”, a relative rarity for Trey Anastasio Band, the trio then moved into fan favorite, “Camel Walk”, ahead of “Heavy Things”, a song that Anastasio, Markellis, and Lawton debuted with Trey Anastasio Band in 1999. From there, the band hit renditions of “Cayman Review” and “Last Tube”, with the latter first getting its debut when the trio’s members were still performing under the moniker 8 Foot Fluorescent Tubes two decades ago. From there, the band offered up the tour debut of “Anything But Me”, marking the first time that the number had been performed non-acoustically by a Trey Anastasio Band outfit. From there, the group closed out their first set with “Alaska” and another Trey Anastasio Band staple, “Simple Twist Up Dave”.

Starting off set two, Trey Anastasio Trio returned with “Ghost”, followed up by “Corona” and “Stealing Time From The Faulty Plan”. “Ghost”, “Corona”, and “Stealing Time From The Faulty Plan” have been performed this tour so far, with all those songs last performed during the second set of Wednesday’s show in Grand Rapids, Michigan, last week. From there, the trio played “Prince Caspian” ahead of the Trey Anastasio band debut of “Shade” and a take on the beloved rarity “Windora Bug”. To close out set two, the trio offered up a take on favorite “Steam” before “Farmhouse” and “Bounce” closed out the set.

Keeping with the theme for the majority of this tour, Trey Anastasio emerged solo for the beginning of the encore—Anastasio did not perform a solo acoustic encore opener during the first night in Chicago, hinting at the fact that these special encores will only occur on the last night the Phish guitarist plays with his trio. Offering up acoustic takes on “Waste”, “Bathtub Gin”, and “Chalk Dust Torture”, Chicago got a good selection of Trey’s solo acoustic work before the rest of the trio emerged for a final rendition of “First Tube”.
