On Saturday night, the Trey Anastasio Trio rounded out their three-show run at the Civic Theatre in New Orleans. As they have throughout this brief tour, Trey Anastasio, Russ Lawton, and Tony Markellis dug into tonally textured takes 0n TAB and Phish favorites and continued to work more new songs into the rotation.

Trey opened the performance with a solo acoustic rendition of “Theme From The Bottom”, getting the crowd singing along early. “Cayman Review” came next, followed by “Undermind”, one of several Phish songs that have become staples of the Trey Trio’s setlists this tour. “The Way I Feel” was up next, followed by the first tour debut of the evening, Paper Wheels track “Sometime After Sunset”. “Frost” provided a brief breather before another Phish rocker, “Stealing Time From The Faulty Plan”, quickly helped the show pick up steam once more, the group’s power trio grit lending itself perfectly to Joy track.

After a botched start and a quick mulligan (“Sorry, guys!” laughed Trey), the trio offered another tour debut in the form of “Spin”, a groove they rode into fuzzed-out depths for one of the set’s best jams. High-energy renditions of “Steam” and “Bounce” brought the first frame to a close.

Set two opened with a quality pairing of “Set Your Soul Free” and “Sand”, both of which were pushed into exploratory territory. “Drifting” and “Bug” came next, before giving way to “Mr. Completely”. The TAB fan-favorite was responsible for one of last year’s most surprising Phish jams when it appeared in Pittsburgh for an extended ride after a 380-show gap. The song once again served as an improvisational centerpiece for the TAT in New Orleans, as they deftly wove the tune into another tour debut–a slow-boiling “Plasma–before landing back in “Mr. Completely”. Another new addition to the TAT rotation, “The Architect”, came next, followed by a celebratory “Tuesday” to close set two.

After opening the show’s encore with a solo acoustic rendition of “More”, Trey dedicated the final song of the evening to his lifelong friend, Chris Cottrell, who passed away this year after a battle with adrenal cancer, before leading into “Push On Til’ The Day”, which references Cottrell in its lyrics.

The Trey Anastasio Trio will round out their spring run tonight with a benefit show at Terminal West in Atlanta, GA. The performance, billed as “Sustain,” will serve as a memorial service for Chris Cottrell and will raise money for the Waterwheel Cancer Fund in his memory.
