Clearly, the Grateful Dead are the Godfathers of all things jam, having a long and storied past that dates back to the Acid Tests with Ken Kesey, in which an unparalleled thirst for musical exploration began. The Grateful Dead were right in the middle of the counterculture movement, and went on to become one of America’s greatest touring musical acts, serving up 3+ hours worth of music on a nightly basis, never playing the same set, as well as never playing a song the same way, instead choosing to explore each note played and the space between those notes. Jamming isn’t a term coined by the Grateful Dead, but they certainly gave much more meaning to the term.

Evolution of Jam Tribute Show Volume 2 ft. Reckoning (Grateful Dead), Uncle Ebenezer (Phish), and Tractorbear (Disco Biscuits) at The Hall at MP – Friday, Oct. 7th

Following in their footsteps, but playing a version of improvised rock that was altogether something unto itself, was a quartet from Vermont, that went on to become the powerhouse known as Phish. From a beautiful rock opera called Gamehendge, to “The Set” at Big Cypress to ring in the year 2000, and being at the forefront of the internet movement and taking full advantage of the world wide web to distribute their music and live downloads of shows, Phish went from a small college band to the premier live act in America through simple grassroots ideas.

Then, another quartet from University of Pennsylvania decided to throw their hat in the mix, play some Dead and Phish tunes, eventually write some of their own music with a club-like spin on it. They turned jam into a full-on dance party, dubbing their own style called “Trancefusion.” This band is The Disco Biscuits. They most definitely can jam from a traditionalist perspective, but what they do in a live setting rivals what any trance/house DJ out there can do, making for one wild, visceral experience.

In honor of three of our favorite jam bands, Live for Live Music and CEG Presents our Evolution of Jam Tribute Show featuring performances from Reckoning, Uncle Ebenezer, and Tractorbear, playing the music of the Grateful Dead, Phish, and The Disco Biscuits, respectively. This is Volume 2, as all three bands threw a sold-out show at NYC’s DROM back in late 2014. The show is set for Friday, October 7th at The Hall at MP in Brooklyn, NY. Tickets are $15adv / $20dos, with a start time of 11pm, and going until…..whenever the bands feel like. Come get your jam on with us!
