Umphrey’s McGee rolled through the Brooklyn Bowl in Philadelphia, PA on Wednesday night. The South Bend, IN-bred sextet delivered bust-outs of Wang Chung‘s “Dance Hall Days” and Iron Maiden‘s “The Trooper” during the midweek extravaganza.

The first frame on the Philly lanes opened with “There’s No Crying In Mexico”, a pulsating instrumental driven by Ryan Stasik and his trusty bass. As the rest of the band joined Stasik, Kris Myers (drums), and Andy Farag (percussion), UM segued to “Miss Tinkle’s Overture”, which saw some masterful interplay between guitarists Jake Cinninger and Brendan Bayliss. “Miss Tinkle’s” eventually found a home in a lengthy telling of “Mulche’s Odyssey”, bringing the band to the midpoint of the first set.

A short break before and after “Nopener” served as a slight reprieve from the constant linking of songs, however, that didn’t last long as “Hajimemashite” came paired with “Tribute to the Spinal Shaft”, which eventually joined with “Out Of Order” and kept the segue train rolling right into “Water” and “August”.

Following a set break, Umphrey’s returned to the stage and opened with a hard-rocking “1348”. Bayliss and Cinninger traded vocals on this cut which launched into an extensive jam and led to a bust-out of “Dance Hall Days”. Last played at The Moore Theatre in Seattle, WA on March 21st, 2015 (per All Things Umphrey’s), this marked the first “Dance Hall Days” in 527 shows. UM bowled a strike during this second frame, knocking ’em down at the Brooklyn Bowl with takes on “Prowler”, “2nd Self”, “Hurt Bird Bath”, “I Don’t Know What I Want”, and “2×2”.

UM kept the surprises coming after the encore break. Cinninger, Bayliss, Myers, Farag, Stasik, and keyboardist Joel Cummins took the stage once more and rolled through a cover of Iron Maiden’s “The Trooper”. This would mark only the third-ever performance of “The Trooper”, which hadn’t seen inclusion on a setlist since November 7th, 2014 in Madison, WI—a gap of 570 shows (per All Things Umphrey’s). Once the band shook off a false start, it blasted into the metal track in earnest and eventually linked it with the second set opener, “1348”.
