On Saturday night, Umphrey’s McGee continued their Labor Day Weekend run with a performance at Huntington, NY’s The Paramount featuring an opening set by rising jam/rock/funk sextet, BIG Something.

After kicking off the performance with an exploratory “The Floor”, Umphrey’s moved into an always-welcome “Day Nurse” which similarly saw the sextet flex their improvisational abilities. A short and sweet “Roulette” came next, followed by a thrilling “Der Bluten Kat” > “Divisions” > “Der Bluten Kat” sandwich in which the “Divisions” meat stretched to nearly 17 minutes in length and featured some clever teasing of Jimi Hendrix‘s “Third Stone From The Sun”. Another lengthy jam out of “Remind Me” brought the set to a close.

The band returned for their second set with “Looks” followed by “Night Nurse” and “Crucial Taunt”. Next, the band moved into the rare rendition of “Mantis Ghetts”, marking its first appearance since March 2017. From there, the band moved straight into the much more common “Mantis”, a 19+ minute behemoth that served as the improvisational centerpiece of the set.

A rare, sing-along cover of Pixies‘ “Where Is My Mind?” came in out of “Mantis” before “The Silent Type” brought the set to a close. Finally, “Mulche’s Odyssey” served as the encore exclamation point for an excellent show.

Umphrey’s McGee will close out their summer tour tonight, Sunday, September 1st, at Saranac Brewery in Utica, NY. For a full list of upcoming Umphrey’s McGee tour dates, head to the band’s website here.
