This past weekend, Umphrey’s McGee performed a pair of drive-in concerts at SeatGeek Stadium in Bridgeport, IL as part of the At The Drive In series. On Friday, Umphrey’s released pro-shot video of the band’s performance of “Hurt Bird Bath” from the first concert, which took place on September 5th.

The two-night run of drive-in concerts comes after Umphrey’s completed two sets of virtual concerts with the Live In The Boondocks series in June and the pair of Wrapped In The Round concerts earlier this month. Saturday’s show marked the band’s first time onstage before a live audience since a show at the Belly Up Aspen on March 7th.

The pro-shot video opens with a flurry of cars honking their horns in approval of the band’s performance thus far, prompting guitarist Brendan Bayliss to remark, “Never in my life has the sound of this many cars honking sounded so beautiful.” With that, Umphrey’s launches into “Hurt Bird Bath” from the group’s sophomore album, 2002’s Local Band Does OK. Even after watching the band’s shows for the Wrapped In The Round series, nothing compares to seeing the whole group together in a traditional stage setup with all of the lights and accouterments that makes them a live band.

The song, which came in the middle what would ultimately prove to be a six-song set, delivered exactly what fans had been waiting for all these months in quarantine. Grazing the 15-minute mark, “Hurt Bird Bath” quickly revs up from a low rumble into a full-on roar as the interplay between musicians and the environment reinvigorates the live music part of one’s brain that has laid dormant since March.
