Umphrey’s McGee will tell its story with a new documentary Frame x Frame, set to premiere next month online and in the band’s adopted hometown of Chicago. The film from director Pete Herzog and producer Kevin Browning arrives as part of the progressive jam band’s ongoing 25th-anniversary celebration.

Billed as “A celebration of 25 years of music and the next best show,” Frame x Frame chronicles UM’s history through archival footage from onstage and off. Along with the historic footage, the film features new interviews with supporters like venerated Rolling Stone music journalist David Fricke and jam impresario Peter Shapiro, who plainly states in the trailer, “You want to root for Umphrey’s McGee.”

Frame x Frame comes from longtime Umphrey’s McGee collaborator Pete Herzog. In addition to providing visual effects for big-budget projects like the Spy Kids franchise and The Simpsons ride at Universal Studios, Herzog has also directed a half dozen projects for Umphrey’s including music videos both live and in the studio.

“I love music documentaries and in 2011, I had a vision that I wanted to direct a 25th-anniversary rockumentary for UM,” Herzog said. “Since 2006, our family has been vacationing around the band’s tour schedule and have seen some amazing sights, met some incredibly kind people, and rocked the hell out of some concerts.”
