On Monday night, Umphrey’s McGee rang in the new year with their fourth and final year-ending performance at Atlanta’s The Tabernacle.

The three-set show saw the band bust out a number of long-lost songs and welcome longtime collaborator Michael “Mad Dog” Mavridoglou and his Filthy Little Secret Horns to augment the celebration and wage musical war with Umphrey’s for an encore “Horns vs. Band Challenge”.

After working through a number of UM staples new and old, the band broke out the first big surprise of the night late in set one with their first rendition of “Roundabout” since 2015, a gap of 311 shows. The band began set two with “Draconian”, the band welcomed the Filthy Little Secret Horns—comprised of Mad Dog on trumpet, Jeff Coffin on sax, Chris Ott on trombone, and Josh Quinlan on sax—to the party. The horn-augmented festivities started big with Umphrey’s McGee’s second-ever rendition of Weather Report‘s “River People”, followed by the 2018-vintage “Whistle Kids”. “Gents” was up next, followed by a horn-bolstered “Looks” featuring a jam on Motley Crue‘s “Dr. Feelgood”.

The Umphrey’s debut of Little Feat‘s “Fat Man in the Bathtub” came next followed by “Comma Later” before the set wrapped up with the band’s first and only rendition of Miles Davis‘ “It’s About That Time” of 2018.

As midnight approached, the third and final set of the night began with the core band working through “Hurt Bird Bath”. The Filthy Little Secret Horns returned for “Attachments”, which moved into the traditional “Auld Lang Syne” as calendars flipped to 2019 and balloons and confetti showered the crowd. Following the countdown, the band continued with a seamless stretch of “Resolution”, “In The Kitchen”, and “Kula” before closing the set with “Booth Love” (featuring “Carol of the Bells” teases) and the Umphrey’s debut of INXS‘s “What You Need”.

Finally, when the band returned for their encore for a “Horns vs. Band” challenge that saw the core act trade snippets of several songs with their guest brass, including pieces of Glenn Miller‘s “In The Mood”, Led Zeppelin‘s “The Ocean”, Jimi Hendrix‘s “Voodoo Child”, Outkast‘s “So Fresh, So Clean”, Charlie Parker‘s “Donna Lee”, and Poison‘s “Unskinny Bop”. After the battle, Umphrey’s closed the night with “Hajimemashite” and their first rendition of KISS‘s “Detroit Rock City” since its debut in 2012, a gap of 674 shows.

Umphrey’s McGee will dive headfirst into 2019 when their Wax On, Wax Off tour, which begins on January 11th in Richmond, VA. For a full list of the band’s upcoming dates, head to their website here.
