Umphrey’s McGee finally arrived at the gorgeous Harpa Concert Hall and Conference Centre in Reykjavik on Friday to kick off RÖCKJAVIK, the band’s first-ever destination event in Iceland.

Following a VIP set featuring performances of “It Doesn’t Matter”, “Red Tape”, “Blue Echo”, “Wellwishers”, and “Orfeo”, the globetrotting Umphrey’s faithful packed into the sprawling Eldborg Hall for a two-set UM blowout.

While rain continued to dampen the Icelandic capital, spirits inside the theater were lively as the band dove into a first set capped by a big “Utopian Fir” wrapped around an explosive rendition of Pink Floyd‘s “Shine On You Crazy Diamond”.

Set two got a hot start with a scorching “Der Bluten Kat” that took a detour through the heartfelt “Final Word”. Brendan Bayliss made light of the rainy weather with some well-placed ad-libs, referencing the two-year postponement of the Iceland shows and following the line “can’t compensate for nasty weather, pray tomorrow’s will be better” with “doesn’t matter if it’s not,” to the delight of the crowd.

The appearance of prescient songs like “Half Delayed” and “All In Time” reflected the gratefulness on the stage and in the audience that these shows were finally taking place, while a massive “The Bottom Half” set-closer provided the glorious prog-jam goods that pulled so many fans to Iceland in the first place.

An eventful encore kicked off with “Andy’s Last Beer” and continued into “August” before “All In Time” reared its head once again to close things out, adding one last note of patient gratitude to the proceedings.

Following the Umphrey’s show, the party kept on rolling in Reykjavik with late-night shows by instrumental prog-jam quartet TAUK and Icelandic rockers The Vintage Caravan.
